Multimedia communication deals with the transfer, the protocols, services and mechanisms of discrete media data (such as text and graphics) and continuous media data (like audio and video) in/over digital networks. Multimedia systems have attracted much attention during the last few years in the society as a whole and in the information technology field in particular. Multimedia communication comprises the techniques needed for distributed multimedia systems. To enable the access to information such as audio and video data, techniques must be developed which allow for the handling of audiovisual information in computer and communication systems
Basic Overview of Multimedia Communication
Multimedia is everywhere as a communication method to educate, inspire, and encourage people through several digital forms like photography, video, illustration, animation, audio, text, interactive websites and engaging environments. Multimedia itself denotes the integrated manipulation of at least some information represented as continuous media data as well as some information encoded as discrete media data (such as text and graphics). The “manipulation” refers to the act of capturing, processing, communication, presentation and/or storage.
Hence “multimedia communications” deals with the transfer, the protocols, the services and the mechanisms of/for discrete and continuous media in/over digital networks. The transmission of digital video data over a dedicated TV distribution network is not multimedia as long as it does not allow the transfer of some type of discrete media data as well.
Multimedia communications is the field referring to the representation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of machine-process able information expressed in multiple media, such as text, image, graphics, speech, audio, video, animation, handwriting, data files. With the advent of high capacity storage devices, powerful and yet economical computer workstations and high speed integrated services digital networks, providing a variety of multimedia communications services is becoming not only technically but also economically feasible.
Types of Multimedia Communication
Through the proliferation of technology in modern-day homes, people communicate in a variety of ways through multimedia. The term “multimedia” itself can take many forms, but it always relates to the way computers present different elements. Multimedia is common on a variety of kinds of websites and if you use a computer, you use multimedia communication daily.

Text communication encompasses a variety of forms and is one of the most common forms of multimedia communication in a computer user’s day-to-day activities. Text communication includes such areas of Internet use as reading a website, reading and writing email messages and instant messaging. Text communication is also the oldest form of multimedia communication, as the first computers displayed text only.
Though images might not seem to be a form of communication in the same way that text is a form of communication, it is a legitimate form of multimedia communication that many users enjoy daily. Examples include browsing an online photo album, opening and viewing images attached to an email and looking at photos that accompany stories on news websites.
A common form of Web-based multimedia communication is audio communication. This form involves receiving a message through an audio format, such as listening to an online radio station or playing a music file. If you use the Internet to stream a radio station broadcast, for example, you are engaging in a form of audio communication. Audio communication often combines with other forms of multimedia communication. A slideshow, for example, can feature text, images and audio together.
As its name indicates, video communication is a form of multimedia communication through video. It is common on many websites, including YouTube and the websites of television stations. Since high-speed Internet has become common, video communication has increased as users are able to access this form of multimedia communication. Types of video communication include .AVI, MPEG, WMV and QuickTime files.
