Android : The Flexible Operating System

Android is leading the smartphone market as a champion with the leadership rate of 84 %, over 3.3 billion smartphones are running on the Android operating system because of its efficiency and performance.

It is an open source operating system which is made on Linux-kernel. Today Android is featured in almost 70% of smart electronics globally but the primary sector that has hooked with this operating system is the smartphone market. On average, almost every fourth of the smartphone is running on the Android operating system. And because it is open source, it has a massive community of developers across the globe.

The First Boot:

The journey of this revolutionary operating system has begun in October 2003 [1] by Andy Rubin and his three teammates. Rubin described this project as “tremendous potential in developing smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner’s location and preferences” [1]. Later on, one of the members of Google estimated the potential of the futuristic operating system because it has the efficiency to become a revolutionary OS and they desired to buy it but the first meeting didn’t work well, but later on July 2005 Google acquired the android at the cost of at least 50 million dollars [1].

The first ever phone that featured the Android operating system was a prototype of a blackberry phone without a touchscreen. Later, to compete with the Apple’s operating system, Google announced the support for the touchscreen. The first touchscreen commercial phone running on Android was HTC’s Dream G1 with the encirclement of basic applications such as web browser, Gmail, text messaging etc.

The first Android version that was released with Google was the android alpha or 1.0. After the release of alpha, several versions released with the time and every update has improved and became more efficient. From the release of alpha to till date, total 16 (Including the android Pie *Beta state) number of updates have been rolled out by android. The released versions are listed below:

Release date: 23 September 2008

The features included in the alpha update was the web browser, camera, Gmail, Google contacts, calendar and other Essential application of Google. The primary attention was the app store that permits the owner to download application form the store.

  • Beta:android beta logo

Release Date: 9 February 2009

Android released the second update and named it android beta. The update has fixed some of the bugs which were spotted in the previous release Android version and some of the necessary improvements have done on the software level.

  • Cupcake:android cupcake logo

Release date: April 27, 2009

The third update was a cupcake, and from this update, Google has started providing its name after desserts. On that time it was a significant update, as the features included was support for third-party virtual keyboards with text prediction, widgets support, video recording and video playback, copy-paste feature in the web browser, animated transitions, auto rotation, ability to upload videos on Youtube and pictures on Picasa.

Release Date: September 15, 2009.

The initialization of Google’s search widget was done with this update. The feature that was updated or included was faster access to camera and more integration in the gallery, camera, and camcorder. Ability to select multiple photos for deletion with these essential features the overall speed was also improved.

Release date: October 26, 2009.

The search option was added in the message application, numerous new camera features including the flash, digital zoom, scene mode, color effect etc. , refreshed browser UI with the support of HTML5 and optimization in hardware and speed. Later the subversion of éclair was released with minor improvements and fixed bugs, as éclair 2.0.1 and éclair 2.1.

  • Froyo:android froyo logo

Release Date: May 20, 2010.

Froyo was based on the new version of Linux kernel and the main features that it included were the optimization in speed, support for the Android Cloud to Device messaging service, support for the installation of applications to the external memory has added. The major attractive feature of this update was the support of USB tethering and wifi hotspot functionality

  • Gingerbread:android gingerbread logo

Release date: December 6, 2010.

The new update was faster and dull in comparison to the last one and has appended the features such as the new Download manager, added support of NFC, support for multiple cameras, improved power management for better battery life and performance, native support for more sensors such as gyroscopes and barometers. The initialization of the Easter egg was done in this update, with zombies in the background.

  • Honeycomb:android honeycomb logo

Release date: Feb 22, 2011.

The support for the tablet screens has added. Easter egg has changed to an image of a Tron-themed bumblebee, multitasking has simplified. Multiple browser tabs, Hardware accelerated, support for multi-core processor added.

Release date: Oct 19, 2011.

The primary feature inclination and updates were, Integrated screenshot capture by holding power and volume down button, access to the application from the lock screen, better voice recognition and Face Unlock. Face unlock was firstly introduced in this update.

  • Jelly Bean:android jelly bean logo

Release Date: Jul 13, 2012

A smoother user interface, expandable notifications, support added for lock screen widgets, introduction to daydream, group messaging, fixed Bluetooth audio streaming bugs, native emoji support, other bug fixes, and performance enhancement.

  • Kitkat:android kitkat logo

Release Date: Sep 3, 2013.

KitKat was the first android with the requirement of a minimum amount of ram to be 512mb. The features that were included in KitKat was Support of wireless printing, a new framework for UI transitions, sensor batching and step detector and significant improvements were done in the optimization of the operating system.

Release Date: Nov 12, 2014.

The significant changes that took place in the lollipop update were the update in the UI, the new UI was fresh and transitions became smooth and settings including the status bar, action bar got several changes in the User Interface. High definition voice calls available between compatible LTE 4g devices running Android 5.1.

Release Date: Oct 5, 2015.

The UI was pretty same like the old update but besides, the new search bar has been added in the settings to search the settings easily. Introduction of Doze mode, which reduces CPU speed while the screen is off to save battery life

  • Nougat:android nougat logo

Release Date: Aug 22, 2016.

Nougat was the major release of operating system. With the ability to zoom in the display screen and other essential features such as added the clear all feature in the recent list, daydream was introduced in the Nougat, improvements to file browser, the multi-window feature was introduced in this update.

  • Oreo:android oreo logo

Release Date: Aug 21, 2017.

The most significant change to the foundations till date: a modular architecture that makes it easier and faster for hardware makers to deliver Android updates

Picture-in-picture support was added. Redesigned quick setting and settings with white background.

  • Pie(Beta State): android pie logo

Release Date Jul 25, 2018.

The upcoming stable update of android is Pie. On August 06, 2018 the pie has defined as the official name of android P. During the launch of the update Pie AI was the main keyword that was used iteratively, in this update the navigation pill has replaced the navigation bar. Navigation pill is a slider placed on the home screen and uses gestures for navigation.

What makes it better?

Today the technology is changing and upgrading rapidly and this race of technology has provided us with the variety to select in the products. So in the operating system, today a variety of operating systems are available in the market, so why to choose Android? How it is better than the other available operating systems? Android has certain features that make it more preferable:


Today most of the devices are running on the Android and due to its open source nature, it has a considerable community spread across the globe and that makes it more preferable than other operating systems.


With every update, the android is getting better and Google never forgets to optimize the OS. Android is way better optimized and much preferable due to regular optimization by regular updates.

Features :

There may be dozens of other operating systems available, but the set features that Android offers to its users are incredible. There is no operating system which provides that many features with these thunder performance. It provides it’s own application store from where one can download and install a lot of applications.


The reason and the significant fact that makes android out of the box is the customization. Android offers tons of customization to its users, which lakes in the other costly operating system’s. customization is the main factor that made Android as the winner.

Regular Updates:

Android continuously rolls out the updates, at the rate of around two updates every year. With this regularity in updates makes users believe in android.
